The University of California, Berkeley was established in 1869, as a merger between the College of California and the Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College. The curriculum was modeled after that of Yale and Harvard, with the addition of modern languages to the core courses in Latin, Greek, history, English, mathematics, and natural history.

Ranked first in both top ten graduate programs and the number of “distinguished faculty scholarship programs, UC Berkeley holds literally hundreds of awards from National Academy of Engineering Awards to both the Pulitzer and the Nobel Prizes.

UC Berkeley Libraries
UC Berkeley’s myriad of libraries fall into three categories, including what is referred to as “the Library,” affiliated libraries, and departmental libraries/reading rooms. "The Library" consists of Doe Library, Moffitt Library, the Bancroft Library, and 24 specialty libraries serving various academic disciplines in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences. The 13 affiliated libraries on the Berkeley campus contain specialized research collections of unique materials associated with specific research and academic departments and professional schools on campus. Many academic departments also maintain their own informal libraries and reading rooms for use by department faculty and students.
